Elderly woman found dead in Tampines flat after neighbours call police
An elderly woman was found dead in her HDB flat on Wednesday (Oct 23) evening, after neighbours found food left outside her door for two days.
The woman, believed to be in her 70s,lived alone in her three-room unit located on the third floor of Block 108, Tampines Street 11, reported Shin Min Daily News on Thursday.
According to the Chinese evening daily, the incident occurred at about 6pm, with police finding the elderly woman dead in her home upon their arrival.
Based on the foul odour emanating from the unit, it is believed that the woman had been deceased for several days.
A neighbour told Shin Min that the last time she saw the deceased was on Sunday, as the latter was taking the lift down from her floor. She had seemed well then.
While there was no sign of the elderly woman on Monday, the neighbour saw that there was a bag of food hanging at her door.
According to her, the elderly woman would usually have food delivered to her daily by another resident in the estate.
The neighbour, a 59-year-old homemaker, told Shin Min that her suspicions were raised when she saw the same bag of food still outside the unit on Tuesday, but did not investigate further.
It was only on Wednesday that neighbours grew worried after visiting the woman's unit where they detected the foul odour and alerted the police.
Describing the woman as someone who cared for others, the neighbour added: "We got along very well for many years. We are all very sad that she is gone so suddenly."
Another neighbour told Shin Min that the deceased had been living alonefor many years and did not appear to have any visitors during the holidays or festive seasons.
Wouldn't the person delivering food to her doorstep have at least knocked on the door to inform her upon arriving? Don't tell me he just left it right there and simply walked away?
Perhaps he did buzz her, then departed afterwards as always, assuming she will retrieve the food in her own time - that might be the longstanding arrangement between them bah

Man's body found at Bedok flat after neighbours discover foul-smelling fluid from unit
The decomposed body of a 76-year-old man was found inside his home after his neighbours noticed a foul-smelling liquid leaking from his unit.
The body was discovered at about 10.45am on Thursday (March 14) inside an eighth-floor unit at Block 713 Bedok Reservoir Road, reported Shin Min Daily News.
When a reporter from Shin Min arrived at the scene that afternoon, three Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) personnel had broken into the unit.
Several police officers were also present.
There was also a pool of liquid outside the man's flat, and a foul smell in the air.
Four members of the elderly man's family were present to identify the body, but none of them wanted to be interviewed.
A resident, who did not want to be named, said that the deceased was a Chinese man who had been living in the flat alone for more than 40 years.
"I noticed the foul smell these few days and I saw the liquid on the floor, so I called his aunt who works nearby. She then informed his family members," said the man, who lives on the same floor as the deceased.
Another resident in the same block, surnamed Chen, said he saw police officers arrive at about 11am.
"I was downstairs watering the plants in the morning, when I was about to leave my house a neighbour told me that there was a smell coming out from the elderly man's flat, that's when I realised something was amiss."
The 81-year-old added that the deceased was single.

So the guy was aware of the foul smell for DAYS and only took action afterwards? Sheesh!
As usual the police issues a very cursory, templated press statement; I am beginning to wonder whether they do actually expend serious effort to probe these incidents or just simply toss them aside when the initial public interest dies down....
'No one came to visit her': Woman, 69, found dead in Telok Blangah flat, lived alone for over 10 years

It was later found that a 69-year-old woman had died alone in her home at Block 19 Telok Blangah Crescent, Shin Min Daily News reported on Thursday (Jan 4).
Her body was discovered on Jan 3 at around 10am.
According to the Chinese evening daily, the unit was earlier cordoned off by police anda foul smell was still apparent five hours after the woman's body was found.
The woman's neighbour, surnamed Zheng, said that the deceased was Chinese, and she had been living alone for more than 10 years after her elderly mother died.
"'No one came to visit her, even on public holidays," the 75-year-old retiree added.
According to other neighbours, they had noticed a foul smell as early as Tuesday (Jan 2).
While they initially thought it came from rotten food or meat, they called the police after the smell became stronger.
Responding to AsiaOne's queries, the police confirmed that they were alerted to a case of unnatural death.
The woman was pronounced dead after she was found lying motionless in the Telok Blangah flat, they said.
"Based on preliminary investigations, the police do not suspect foul play," the police said, adding that investigations are ongoing.
The woman, who is in her 60s, told the paper that she did so as she was afraid of dying alone in her rental flat.
"I wander about during the day but I will go home to sleep at night," she explained. "Walking around can also improve my health, and aid recovery from my injury."

In response to a Stomp query, the police said they were alerted to a case of unnatural death at the block at about 8pm.
The elderly man was found lying motionless in a residential unit and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Based on preliminary investigations, the police do not suspect foul play.
A source told Shin Min Daily News that he noticed six police cars and a black police van at the scene at around 10pm.
He recounted: "I saw multiple police officers entering and exiting one of the units on the sixth floor. They had also cordoned off the elevator."
The deceased's brother, 67-year-old Mr Jiang, said he had called his brother at about 6pm but no one answered.
"I rushed to my brother's house and arrived at about 7pm," he added. "I found him lying motionless on the ground, so I immediately called the police and they came within 15 minutes."
Mr Jiang said his brother has a cheerful personality and had resided in the flat for at least 30 years, adding: "He wasn't ill, but had surgery on his liver before."
There was a pool of blood in the living room, reported Shin Min. The blood had turned brown but there was no odour.
When Shin Min visited the block on Saturday (Dec 2), the woman surnamed Chen, clarified that she is not homeless. Chen, who's in her 60s, said that she lives with her friends in a rental flat at Ang Mo Kio Street 31.

Despite living together with her friends, however, her flatmates are seldom home.
Hence, the elderly woman would often leave her flat to roam about.
"I wander about during the day but I will go home to sleep at night," she explained. "Walking around can also improve my health, and aid recovery from my injury."
Chen added that her siblings are already married and she does not want to bother them.
"They know I'm here, but I don't want them to worry. Staff from welfare agencies also offered help, but they understood my situation after I talked to them."
Residents rattled after 2 corpses found in same Bukit Merah block within 2 months
Within a short span of two months, two corpses were discovered in separate incidents at Block 79, Indus Road over at Bukit Merah.
The dead bodies were only found when disconcerted neighbours noticed a foul smell emanating from the homes of the deceased.
The first body was identified to be a 41-year-old Malay man who lived on the 14th floor. He was found on May 5, approximately three or four days after his death, reported Shin Min Daily News.
Speaking to Shin Min, a resident living on the same floor said the deceased allegedly suffers from asthma, but he was unaware of the deceased's cause of death.
A 16-year-old resident who lives in the unit opposite the deceased said: "When the police opened the door [of the deceased's home], the stench came in. I couldn't sleep that night, and I didn't have the energy for football training the next day."
He also recalled that he had heard the deceased tell his father that he had a heart problem.
A 63-year-old resident surnamed Wang, who lives on the same floor, told the Chinese daily he smelled a strange smell on May 31.
And when the smell gradually grew more pungent, he suspected it originated from the neighbouring unit.
The residents called the police a few days later on June 2 when the smell still had not dissipated. The police found that the 51-year-old male resident had been dead for several days, reported the Chinese daily.
"Although they removed the remains, the smell is still very strong. Especially when the wind blows, the putrid smell is unbearable," Wang said.
"I have to spray it with disinfectant several times a day, but the smell is still there."
According to Shin Min, the residents interviewed on June 8 said that the smell on the 14th floor had dissipated. There was no peculiar smell in the corridor on the ninth floor, but the rotten smell still lingered in the stairwell on the 10th floor.
Cleaning the deceased's home
In an interview with Shin Min, Rahman Razali, the 41-year-old owner of cleaning company DDQ Services, said that trauma cleaning can only begin after the authorities have concluded their investigations and removed the body.
They can only enter the residence to clean with the permission of the deceased's family.
"Even the Housing Development Board (HDB) can't hire us to clean up the flats, unless the family members, relatives, friends and colleagues of the deceased can't be found," he explained.
Rahman also said that sometimes families are unwilling to pay extra to clean up the deceased's home.
"I have encountered family members who asked us to clean up the house six months after the deceased died, maybe [they wanted] to sell or rent the house."
Trauma cleaning typically takes three to eight hours, according to Rahman. When cleaning, cleaners must wear full-body protective clothing and masks. The cleaning products used are also not store-bought cleaning agents or air fresheners.
"We have our own suppliers who will provide our special chemical cleaning products, which can effectively remove decay, blood, body fluids, etc., as well as eliminate smells."

Residents who live around the HDB block told Shin Min Daily News that the deceased had been running his bicycle shop, George Bicycle Shop, for more than 20 years.
He would usually sit on a chair outside the shop and sleep at the shop at night.
The man also used a personal mobility device, added the residents.
An employee of a milk tea shop nearby also shared that when she saw the deceased on Jun. 7, the day before his body was found, she did not notice anything amiss.
"We are shocked to learn about his passing as he appeared quite healthy. We never thought he would pass away suddenly," the employee added.
Man's family members found him on the floor
Another employee of a flower shop nearby said the deceased kept to himself and would not talk to his neighbours much, but he would nod his head to acknowledge them.
While he typically manned the bicycle repair shop alone, the deceased had family members, added the employee.
The employee shared that three individuals, who were believed to be the man's family members, were also at the scene of the incident when the police were conducting their investigations.
Shin Min reported that it was believed that the deceased's family members were visiting him at the shop when they found him lying on the ground and alerted the authorities.

On Wednesday (10 April), a 63-year-old man was found dead in his two-room flat at 125A Tengah Drive.
He did not respond to his family’s calls or texts for 10 days, Shin Min Daily News reported.
One week before the incident, his sister also dreamt of his passing.
Based on preliminary investigations, the police ruled out foul play. The case is classified as an unnatural death.
Deceased’s family thought he had gone on vacation
The deceased, surnamed Guo (transliterated from Chinese), reportedly moved into the flat alone in January this year.
Before that, he lived with his sister for about a year after his divorce three years ago.
Speaking to the Chinese site, his sister highlighted that he was not fond of replying to messages and calls.
He also mentioned to his family recently that a friend had invited him to Genting Highlands.
This led them to believe he may have gone on vacation and thus did not respond to them for the past 10 days.
Shin Min Daily News reported that the deceased was last online on 31 March.
Sister dreamt of his passing one week before his death was confirmed
Mr Guo’s sister made a trip to the unit on Wednesday (10 April).
According to her, when she was purchasing the food she intended to visit him with, she heard faint noises of what sounded like her brother calling her name.
She also revealed that on 3 April, she dreamt that he passed away with a cut on the back of his hand.
When she arrived at his doorstep that day, her brother’s walking stick was wedged between the wooden door and the metal gate. Moreover, his windows were left open.
A strange smell emanating from the unit indicated to her that something was amiss.
She then called the police who found Mr Guo motionless inside his home. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Man, 73, who lived alone, found dead in Hougang flat after estranged wife paid a visit
A 73-year-old man was found dead alone in his flat at Block 630 Hougang Avenue 8.
He was discovered when his wife came to visit him on Feb. 20, 2024.
No one answered the door at that time.
He was found dead four days later at about 11:35am, reported Shin Min Daily News.
Lived alone
One neighbour told Shin Min that the deceased had lived there for nearly 10 years.
He was often alone and liked to hoard things, she said.
She added that she avoided the old man as he was known to get into conflict with other neighbours.
"He was a tall and big guy who usually rode his bicycle out to buy breakfast. The last time I saw him was last week," she stated.
She shared that the man used to live with his wife, who moved out several years ago.
Visit from estranged wife
When she paid a visit to the deceased's flat, the wife asked residents downstairs which unit her husband was in.
Believing that the woman no longer remembered her husband's address, the neighbour led her to his apartment.
They knocked on his door many times, but he never responded.
They ended up pushing open the front door, but there was still no sign of the man.
"The bedroom door was shut, so I believe the uncle died in his room," the neighbour told Shin Min.
She said the wife didn't say why she was visiting, and left after not being able to find her husband.
Foul stench
The next day, the neighbour noticed the smell of something rotten emanating into her house.
Thinking that a lizard or mouse had died somewhere, she searched the house to no avail.
The stench grew so strong that she even had trouble sleeping at night, she told Shin Min.
Sensing that something was amiss, the neighbour went to check out the man's unit.
She only dared to make a police report after other neighbours also voiced their suspicions.
Case of unnatural death
In response to Shin Min's queries, the police confirmed that they received a report of an unnatural death.
The man was found lying unconscious in his unit.
He was later pronounced dead.

I'm afraid of dying alone at home, says woman seen loitering at Ang Mo Kio void deck
Afraid that she would die alone at home, an elderly woman has been lingering at the void deck at Block 345 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 over the past year.
The woman would occasionally spend the night on the benches there, sparking concerns that she might be homeless, a worried resident told Shin Min Daily News.
When Shin Min visited the block on Saturday (Dec 2), the woman surnamed Chen, clarified that she is not homeless. Chen, who's in her 60s, said that she lives with her friends in a rental flat at Ang Mo Kio Street 31.
"I used to work odd jobs at a company cafeteria but had to stop working over a year ago after a fall. I'm currently recuperating and hope to get back to work once I recover," she said.
Despite living together with her friends, however, her flatmates are seldom home.
This, coupled with recent news reports on seniors who went undiscovered after dying alone at home, made Chen worry that she might get into the same situation.

The second incident occurred a month later on June 2, when neighbours once again noticed a foul smell along the corridor. The deceased was a 51-year-old Chinese man who lived on the ninth floor, reported the Chinese daily.
