Bus runs over construction worker on Anson Road; driver suspended
SINGAPORE: An SMRT bus driver has been suspended after an accident involving a worker near a construction site on Anson Road on Thursday (Jun 27).
Videos circulating on social media show the 33-year-old worker placing a traffic cone on the left-most lane of Anson Road, before turning his back to the traffic.
The bus, turning in from Palmer Road, then hit and ran over him.
After the impact, the worker managed to sit up and got on his feet with help from the bus driver and another worker.
Police said they were alerted to the accident at around 5.25pm and that the worker was taken conscious to the hospital.
In response to CNA's query, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said the man, who was working as a traffic controller, sustained fractures to his right leg. He was taken to Singapore General Hospital after the accident.
"As a general safety measure, all road users must stay vigilant and keep a proper lookout of the surroundings when driving. Site personnel must also be conspicuously attired (eg high visibility vest) to enhance their visibility to road users," said the ministry, adding that it is investigating the incident.
SMRT said the 48-year-old male bus driver was suspended after the accident involving service 970, and that no passengers were on the bus at the time.
"Our dedicated Care Team is in contact with the worker to offer assistance and support," said deputy managing director of SMRT Buses Vincent Gay, adding that it is assisting police with investigations.
The employer of the injured worker is HSC Pipeline Engineering.
To be able to still walk albeit with support after getting knocked down head on, dude sure is one tough mofo. Hope he didn't sustain any severe injuries🙏
