Chef who helmed restaurant in Keong Saik dies aged 33, he had only married earlier this year
Chef Stefan Liau opened his own restaurant in November 2023
Just over a year after opening his restaurant, and barely one year after getting married, the chef-owner of a restaurant along Keong Saik Road has passed away at the age of 33.
The news of Mr Stefan Liau’s sudden passing was broken by his restaurant, Hevel, on Saturday (7 Dec) over Instagram.
Restaurant staff ‘heartbroken’ at passing of chef Stefan Liau
According to the post, Mr Liau was “a kind mentor, a devoted husband, and a close friend” who “touched countless lives with his warmth, creativity, and genuine love for those around him”.
Thus, “no words can express how heartbroken” they are by his death, it said, adding:
The restaurant expressed gratefulness for the love and support of fans, and said it would continue to operate through January next year and “until further notice”, adding:
He got married only in January
His widow, Claresta, told Shin Min Daily News at his wake in Craig Road that the family received the bad news on Friday (6 Dec) morning and it was difficult to accept.
They declined to disclose his cause of death, saying only that his funeral service would be on Monday (9 Dec) and he would then be cremated.
Claresta described her husband as an excellent and dedicated chef who had been in F&B since he was 16, making his mark in the competitive industry through hard work.
The couple got married in January this year, according to his most recent Instagram post on 31 Jan that shared photos of the wedding.
Choking up, Claresta said that when she saw all her friends mourning her husband:
Chef Stefan Liau opened his restaurant in November 2023
Mr Liau opened Hevel on 16 Nov last year, according to Tatler Asia.
The contemporary European restaurant had tasting menus designed by him for refined communal dining experiences.
It was his first time owning a restaurant after stints at Michelin-starred restaurants in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore.
Claresta said they just celebrated Hevel’s one-year anniversary last month. Her husband had always wanted to bring affordable fine dining to more people and strove to discover and nurture talented young chefs.
Hevel’s future now unclear
Miguel, Hevel’s managing director, said Mr Liau said opening the restaurant was a “big gamble” for him as he gave up a stable job as head chef at an exclusive local club.
The team was caught off-guard by his sudden passing, he added, and Hevel’s future was now unclear.
The restaurant will be temporarily closed until 10 Dec and hopes to resume business on 11 Dec.

Man, 58, found dead in Yishun flat after moving in less than a year ago
The body of a 58-year-old man was found in a state of decomposition in his Yishun flat on Saturday night, Jul. 13.
A neighbour at Block 510A Yishun Street 51 had detected what he thought was the smell of "salted fish" and initially assumed it was from a resident's cooking.
A Shin Min Daily News reporter arrived at the scene after a tip-off and saw police removing the body at around 11:30pm.
The authorities were notified some three hours earlier.
Smelled like salted fish being cooked
A 64-year-old neighbour told the Chinese media reporter that he detected an odour as early as Jul. 13 morning when he was watering plants.
As the odour resembled the smell of salted fish being cooked, he did not think too much about it.
It was only until later on in the night that another resident noticed the smell and both of them thought that something was amiss.
The two residents of the block decided to check out the deceased man's unit by opening his window and realised the scent was emanating from his house.
That was when they realised something was wrong and called the police.
Friendly and moved in recently
The neighbour also revealed that the deceased man had just moved into the flat less than a year ago.
The deceased man was also described by the neighbours as someone who was friendly, and would get up as early as 5am to have tea.
"Other than that, there was no indication he had other ailments," the neighbour said.
The police said they received a call for assistance at around 8:20pm.
A man was found in his unit and pronounced dead at the scene.
The police do not suspect foul play, and investigations are ongoing.
Five-star hotel chef, 35, dies 4 days after promotion to head chef, 3 months after marriage
"You showed me colours you know I can’t see with anyone else."
Daniel Teo wrote this on his Facebook page on Mar. 15, 2024, the same month he married his girlfriend of six years.
A sous chef at a five-star hotel, he was promoted to become executive chef just four days ago.
He passed away on Jun. 27, at 35 years old.
A brilliant life cut short
In an interview with Shin Min Daily News, Teo's wife said she had met him at a cooking school and was entranced by his cooking skills and his assiduous personality.
They soon fell in love and married in March this year after dating for six years.
She said they were due to receive their BTO keys by the end of this year.
They bought furniture and appliances and even had plans to start a home business.
They also planned to have a pet dog.
They were both looking forward to a future together.
She said she never expected that she would have to prepare for his eulogy merely three months after their vows.
Destined to be a chef
Teo had helped out at his parent's chicken rice stall since he was young, according to Shin Min.
It was then he developed his passion for the culinary arts.
Since graduating from culinary school, he has worked at various hotels and restaurants and finally became an executive chef.
Shin Min also interviewed Teo's friend, who said that Teo had not planned to climb the corporate ladder but did so only because he wanted to give his family a better life.
A loyal friend and generous soul
Friends and colleagues of Teo described him as a loyal and generous friend who always helped or guided them whenever they needed it without holding back.
A former apprentice of Teo told the Shin Min reporter that Teo had helped him through a period of depression — by bringing food to his house every week as an excuse to check on him.
"He brought ingredients over to my house and said he wanted to research new recipes with me," he said. "I started my own business the next year with his support."

'His biggest dream was to help people': Boy, 14, declared brain dead weeks after collapsing during 2.4km run, mum donates his organs
To honour her youngest son's dream of helping others, a mother decided to donate his organs after the teen was declared brain dead more than three weeks after he collapsed in school.
Isaac Loo, 14, fell unconscious midway through a 2.4km practice run in school at around 8.15am on May 2.
The Woodlands Secondary School student was rushed to KK Women's and Children's Hospital, and later slipped into a coma, reported Lianhe Zaobao.
Alas, the teen was declared brain dead by doctors on Saturday (May 25) — which devastated his 52-year-old mother Fiona Soo, who had clung to hope for weeks that he would wake up.
Soo and her three children are permanent residents from Malaysia. Her husband died of liver cancer in 2022.
Soo told Zaobao that the news from the doctor, broken just four days after Isaac's 14th birthday, was a huge blow.
"The doctor said Isaac may have fallen into a coma because his heart could not bear the stress during vigorous exercise, leading to arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)," she added.
"Our family has no history of this condition, and Isaac has never complained of heart-related chest pain. This happened too suddenly."
Brain death is the irreversible loss of all functions of the brain, and people who are declared brain dead cannot recover or regain consciousness.
While still grieving the loss, Soo had to decide whether to donate the boy's organs.
She was initially reluctant as she wanted to protect her child — until she learnt that more than 400 patients were waiting for organ transplants and remembered that her son had repeatedly said that his biggest dream was to help people.
"I thought about this from my child's perspective and informed the organ donation coordinator of my decision the next day."
Under the Human Organ Transplant Act, a person must be certified brain dead before retrieval of organs can proceed.
About 30 family members and friends, including those from church, turned up at the hospital to say goodbye to Isaac and support Soo.
After singing one last hymn, they tearfully watched as the boy was pushed into the operating theatre, reported Zaobao. The hospital reportedly told Soo that Isaac's corneas, liver, kidneys, pancreas and skin were retrieved and donated to at least three patients.
Chen Ruizhu (transliteration), a church friend, said: "Isaac was helpful and very likable; church members would call him 'baby'. He once said that he wanted to contribute to society, but I didn't expect that he would do so in this way."
In response to AsiaOne's queries, Mrs Tay Yang Fern, principal of Woodlands Secondary School, said they are "deeply saddened".
After Isaac collapsed on the day of the incident, he had difficulty breathing, she said. His PE teacher performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and used a defibrillator on him, and an ambulance was called at around 8.20am.
"All students undergo warm-up exercises and well-being checks by their PE teachers before the start of any physical activity in school," Mrs Tay added.
"Following the incident, school leaders conducted internal checks and ascertained that safety protocols were adhered to."
Mrs Tay added that Isaac's school leaders and teachers had visited him and his family regularly at the hospital to render support and assistance. School staff will also provide emotional support to Isaac's close friends and classmates.
