North Korea has fired a ballistic missile across Japan, its second such provocative move in weeks.
South Korea's military said the missile reached an estimated altitude of about 770km (478 miles) and travelled 3,700km before landing in the sea off Hokkaido.
Japan's PM Shinzo Abe said his country would "never tolerate" North Korea's dangerous actions.
"If North Korea continues to walk down this path, it has no bright future," he said in a statement.
PM Shinzo Abe said North Korea had "trampled on the international community's strong, united resolve toward peace"
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also condemned the launch, which contravened UN sanctions.
He put the burden of response on China and Russia, nuclear-armed North Korea's main economic partners.
"China supplies North Korea with most of its oil. Russia is the largest employer of North Korean forced labour," he said.
"China and Russia must indicate their intolerance for these reckless missile launches by taking direct actions of their own."

The South Korean military said the latest launch - the first since sanctions were tightened - took place from Sunan, the district where Pyongyang's international airport is located, just before 07:00 local time (22:00 GMT on Thursday).

The US and Japan said it was likely an intermediate range intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
According to the initial estimates, it flew considerably higher and further than the missile fired on 29 August.
Japan had called that launch an "unprecedented" threat, while Pyongyang warned it was only "the first step" in its military operations in the Pacific.

S. Korea fires two ballistic missiles against N. Korea's provocation

South Korea's military said Friday it has fired two ballistic missiles in a swift response to North Korea's latest provocation.
The Army shot the Hyunmoo-2 missiles from an eastern site near the inter-Korean border just six minutes after the North's missile firing from Pyongyang.
One "accurately hit" a simulated target in the East Sea about 250 kilometers away, a Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) official told reporters in a background briefing.
It's the same distance between the training area and the Sunan airfield in Pyongyang, where the missile was fired.
The other, however, fell into water "in the initial stage," he added. Related authorities are analyzing the reason.
A defense ministry official pointed out the South's response came while the North's missile was still flying.
He stressed that the military was able to take such a quick measure as it detected signs of the secretive North preparing to fire the missile in advance. Related information was immediately reported to President Moon Jae-in who ordered the missile training.
The JCS, meanwhile, strongly denounced the North for its brinkmanship.
It's a blatant violation of the U.N. Security Council resolution against the regime and a serious threat to the peace on the Korean Peninsula and in the world.
The North will be fully held accountable for all consequences from its provocative acts, the JCS warned in a statement.
On the North's intentions, JCS officials said it's apparently demonstrating that it won't succumb to international pressure and that it will continue the development of missiles and nuclear bombs.
Earlier this week, the U.N. council adopted a new resolution toughening sanctions on Pyongyang, including a measure to cut its oil imports.
The Kim Jong-un regime also appears to be showing off its "mid-range" delivery means for nuclear weapons, while seeking to have the upper hand in future negotiations, they added.
The North has threatened to send its Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missiles into waters close to the U.S. territory of Guam in what it called "enveloping fire." (Yonhap)
Wonder how much tips Dennis Rodman shared with obese Kim on how to make those nuclear rods. Should try that nigger for treason.
