Despite trying to improve our MRT system for years, major disruptions are occurring like clockwork: 2017 has seen more major disruptions than in any previous year.
It is impossible to have a perfect system but our frequent massive breakdowns can be traced to an unaccountable PAP government. PAP’s flawed policies have contributed directly to commuters’ woes.
In 1991, URA had projected a population of 4 million by 2031 earliest but under former PM Goh, the population hit 4 million in 2000.
But Lau Goh wasn’t the only culprit: his successor PM Lee also contributed in a significant way
In 2004 when PM Lee ascended the throne, Singapore’s population was only 4.17 million. By 2009, a mere 5 years later, our population had increased by 820,000 to 4.99 million.
This was not some small percentage of increase but a whopping 20%! Was the MRT system designed to take on such a sudden load increase?
Our MRT system can be akin to a bus with, say, a pax limit of 80 breaching its pax limit everyday.
The bus will likely break down often but with more frequent maintenance and upgrades, it will be up and running again. However, this cannot prevent its premature journey to the scrapyard and replacement.
The 4-million projected population was breached years ago and MRT commuters, similar to the bus passengers in image above, are no longer able to experience a pleasant or reliable journey.
With an even higher population of 5.7 million currently, the MRT system will be forced to run at more frequent intervals, undergo more frequent maintenance and upgrading. This, as we have seen, will contribute to even more major disruptions.
Commuters should confront the issue by asking these questions:
When Lau Goh increased the population to 4.17 million in 2004 – justifying this with his incredibly stupid FT policy – was he bothered about the limitation of our MRT system?
If he was, why did the PAP appoint a retail aunty CEO who had ZERO prior relevant experience to run SMRT?
When PM Lee increased the population – mostly foreigners – to 5.5 million in 2015, did he even take into account the limitation of our MRT system?
Why did PAP appoint former paper general who had ZERO prior relevant experience as CEO of SMRT? Why did PAP allow the CEO to rope in his former army buddies into SMRT?
Based on the facts above, it is obvious to an idiot that PAP is simply not bothered about major MRT disruptions at all. Why should PAP elites be bothered when they are not affected one bit?
MRT commuters should not delude themselves: the PAP-created problem will not be resolved by PAP elites.
And taking to social media to KPKB non stop will also not help one bit, if commuters still don’t know. :(
Fortunately, commuters are still able to resolve this issue once and for all: vote PAP out to get to the root
of the issue. :)
